November 19: Quarter-zips, culture, and calling B.S.

Don’t listen to them.

That was the line.

I was scrolling Facebook this morning, trying to gather my spoons to write (which, if you know, you know), and came across a reel from Sunn m’Cheaux — a Harvard professor of Gullah/Geechee language and culture.

Black man. Brilliant human. Fierce advocate for the power of language.

He was talking about 1/4 zip tops (???), but I clicked anyway because I love a man in a good 1/4 zip.

And what I got?

Whew.

Truth.

Across colors, across clothing.

Here’s what he said:

“Don’t listen to them. Don’t listen to them at all.
Ignore both compliments and criticism.
Ignore both the pushback and the praise.
They are all projecting their stuff.”

And this:

“In all that you do, to thine own self be true.”

I’ve been saying this in my own words for years:

Do what works.

Don’t try to impress strangers on the internet.

Don’t contort yourself into someone you’re not.

Don’t become a version of yourself you think your dream boopsie wants.

Do what works for YOU.

It’s in all my books.

It’s what I say to every client.

It’s how I show up as a coach.

I don’t tell my clients what to do.

I talk to them about what they want more of—and what they’re done tolerating.

I offer strategies.

I give homework.

I support their growth—not by changing them, but by helping them change themselves.

Because the world has so many opinions about who you should be.

But most of those opinions?

Garbage.

Straight from the He-Man Woman Haters League or some corner of the Sulk-ernet where people argue endlessly about what others should be like or do… but haven’t had a healthy relationship since 2009.

(If ever.)

So when I hear the voices in my clients’ heads echoing garbage advice from their past?

I say, with love:

Don’t listen to them.

Your life doesn’t have to match anyone else’s rules.

It just has to fit you.

And if you’re ready to find out what that life could look like?

If you're tired of chasing “good enough” and you’re ready to feel alive again?
