October 26: Are you giving, or being taken from?
This weekend was the third of four in the tantra level 1 workshop I’m taking with Kai Baylis of Bliss Boogie.
Four weekends spread over four months, and a whole lot of feelings.
On Saturday, we had a touch session.
On Sunday, we shared our experiences.
One of the men said he’s always been a giver.
And in that session, he realized there’s a big difference between receiving and taking.
Then came the gut punch: in his life, he’d been constantly cast in the role of taker.
And he’d reveled in that.
The ego boost of it.
A little later, a woman spoke to her experience.
For her, giving was powerful, because she’s rarely had the chance to actively give.
Instead?
She’s mostly felt taken from.
Same circle.
Same exercise.
Two people discovering the same truth from opposite sides.
This is a perfect example of why I’m in this workshop.
It’s certainly not because I’ve spent my life wanting to be a tantra master.
(Shocking, I know.)
But I love continuing to grow and learn in formats outside of my experience, because it gives me new frameworks, new ways of looking at the world, and more tools to help my clients.
Discussions like this also give me insight into other humans.
And I value that.
I’ve taught a class called SELF-ish Sex: Getting the pleasure and connection you want at public kinky events and swinger events.
Where people are often playing in front of others.
Where performativity is rampant.
The big moment comes when people realize they’ve been performing both the giving and the taking.
Why that feels so different from other experiences.
And why they’re so often left craving more.
Thanks to this workshop, I have better language to talk about that now.
New ways of sharing the concept.
And a better understanding of myself and others.
It reminds me that there is always a difference between being performed upon and being given.
And a huge difference between receiving and taking.
All of those spaces are valid and fun in the right circumstances.
But knowing the difference, and knowing what you need (what actually fills you up), matters.
So let me ask:
When was the last time you truly received?
Not took.
Not performed.
Received.
If you had to think about it, or if you’re the giver who keeps walking away empty, let’s talk.

P.S. I’m curious which side of that circle you’d have been on. The giver cast as a taker? The one who’s always been taken from? Or somewhere else entirely?
