August 26: Would this bother you?

I saw this in a relationship group this week, and I wanted to get your feedback.

A woman posted:

"It's Saturday. Your partner makes plans with friends without inviting you. They haven't done anything wrong, they haven't hidden anything, and they told you where they're going. But you were hoping to spend the day together. Would you see this as healthy independence, or a sign that something is changing?"

Here's what I said back.

First: if you were hoping to spend the day together, but you never actually said that, and never made the plans yourself?

That part doesn't feel weird to me at all.

That's not betrayal.

That's just not knowing that you’d already scheduled in your head.

That said, if this isn't normal for your relationship, that's worth noticing.

It's normal for mine.

My partner and I built something where we're two autonomous humans who choose to spend time together on purpose.

Not because we live together and assume we're supposed to.

I love my solo Saturdays.

I love that he has his.

Nobody's tallying favors or keeping score of who chose who.

But if this is new?

Or odd?

Or it's starting to feel like a pattern of inattention?

Pay attention.

Not to the plans.

But to what else might be shifting.

Because here's the thing nobody wants to hear:

Most relationship pain doesn't come from someone doing something wrong.

It comes from someone assuming instead of asking, and hoping instead of saying the actual words out loud.

We erase our partners' autonomy in tiny, sneaky ways all the time, and usually we don't even notice we're doing it.

Wanting someone to read our mind is not the same as communicating.

Feeling hurt by a plan we never voiced a preference about isn't fair to either person.

Building the relationship you actually want means speaking up before the resentment builds.

It means noticing your own patterns before you blame theirs.

If this Saturday scenario hit a nerve, or you've been sitting with a version of your own, I'd love to talk it through.
