December 5: Dreams, disasters, and dance parties—oh my!

Last night, I fell asleep early.

Not eat-dinner-at-4pm early, but still—8:30 was earlier than planned.

I’d had two late nights in a row and was prepping to throw a party tonight, so I figured... rest up.

But instead of sweet dreams, my brain hosted an anxiety-fueled simulation of everything that could go wrong.

The name tags? Forgot them.

The date? Told everyone the wrong one.

The guest list? Capped at 400 instead of 200, and had to turn people away in the cold.

The weather? ICE STORM.

Thanks, subconscious!

It reminded me of 1995—back when I was writing my first book, and I’d spend my nights editing in my dreams and fielding imaginary phone calls from pissed-off fiber artists because I’d supposedly botched their listings.

Just like then, last night was dream-worry-palooza.

Because tonight?

I’m hosting a Kinkmas dance party for 200 people.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know—I host events of this size often. But this one’s different:

New venue.

New setup.

New gear.

New moving parts.

And my first dance party.

It’s normal to get nervous when you try something new. Even when you’re experienced. Even when people assume you’ve got it all handled.

And no, there’s no big moral to this story, except maybe this:

It’s okay to be excited and anxious at the same time. It’s okay to try something new and wonder if you’re going to screw it up. It’s okay to feel all of it—nerves, joy, discomfort, enthusiasm—all at once.

Same goes for relationships.

Being nervous doesn’t mean it’ll go badly. And being confident doesn’t guarantee success.

Sometimes, those messy, sweaty-palmed feelings are your body’s way of saying, “Hey! This matters. Pay attention.”

So I am.

And maybe you are too.

Because whether it’s a party or a person, a first kiss or a first dance...

Trying something new takes guts.
